Microbials/Toxins

Cannabis microbial testing identifies the presence of pathogenic bacteria and mold, which can become dangerous in high concentrations.

Microorganisms present in cannabis products can pose significant health risks when consumed or inhaled. For instance, Aspergillus species can lead to respiratory infections, while Shiga-toxin producing E. coli and various Salmonella species may cause gastroenteritis and diarrhea.
To ensure the cleanliness and safety of your products, we employ quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for screening. This method allows us to detect the presence of these harmful bacteria more accurately compared to traditional plating methods, significantly reducing false positive results.
With our thorough microbiological testing in cannabis, we can identify specific species of organisms and safeguard the wellbeing of consumers.

Heavy Metals

Heavy metals can be present in cannabis due to the use of low-grade pesticides, fertilizers, contaminated water sources, or cultivation in areas with old industrial sites. Testing for heavy metals in cannabis serves a dual purpose: it helps identify dangerous products and also pinpoints potential sources of contamination within the cultivation and manufacturing process.

  • Prioritize safety by submitting a sample of your cannabis products to our El Paso lab for comprehensive heavy metal testing.

Residual Solvents

Residual solvents are organic volatile chemicals used in the production of cannabis concentrates. Testing for residual solvents in cannabis concentrates is crucial, as it ensures the quality and safety of the processed chemicals employed in their production.

During cannabis extraction, certain processing chemicals and solvents with carcinogenic and toxic properties may be used. It is vital for processors to understand the levels of these substances remaining in their products. At Cristoclear Analytics, we utilize a modified HS-GC/MS method to thoroughly analyze cannabis products, identifying trace residues and ensuring compliance with state requirements.

Terpene Identification

why cannabis strains have distinct and flavorful scents!

The distinct scents of cannabis strains are primarily attributed to the presence of aromatic compounds called terpenes. Terpenes are organic compounds found in various plants, including cannabis, and they play a crucial role in producing the different scents and flavors associated with each strain.
Cannabis plants can contain a wide variety of terpenes, and the specific combination and concentration of these terpenes contribute to the unique aroma and taste of each strain. Some common terpenes found in cannabis include myrcene, limonene, pinene, and caryophyllene, among others. Each terpene has its characteristic scent profile, ranging from citrusy and piney to earthy and floral.
Furthermore, terpenes are not only responsible for the pleasant aromas and flavors of cannabis but also believed to interact with other compounds, including cannabinoids like THC and CBD, in what is known as the "entourage effect." This interaction may influence the overall effects and medicinal properties of a particular cannabis strain.
So, the next time you encounter a distinct and flavorful scent associated with a cannabis strain, you'll know that terpenes are responsible for that delightful aroma and taste experience!

Moisture levels & Water activity

Moisture content represents the percentage, by weight, of water in your cannabis product. On the other hand, water activity is a measure of the water not chemically bound to the cannabis product.

Properly cured cannabis flowers should ideally have a moisture content below 13%. By testing the moisture content of your cannabis products, you can assess the effectiveness of your curing process and ensure the overall quality of your product.
Additionally, lower water activity levels in a product can reduce the likelihood of microbial contamination. Conducting water activity testing not only helps identify potential sources of contamination but also ensures your product remains compliant with New Mexico regulations.
